Johannesburg, South Africa — In a heartfelt message filled with gratitude and optimism, Neftaly Malatjie, CEO of the South African Youth Project (SayPro), has extended his sincere appreciation to the University of Johannesburg (UJ) for its unwavering support and partnership in the ongoing intern development program. The collaboration, which has seen dozens of interns transition smoothly into SayPro’s ecosystem, is not only a testament to UJ’s commitment to practical education but also a beacon of hope for youth empowerment in South Africa.
In reflecting on the early challenges faced in the program, Malatjie noted:
“There was a moment when we were concerned about the readiness of the interns and the operational demands we were facing. But UJ assured us with calm and confidence — they said everything is going to be fine about the interns. And they were absolutely right.”
A Partnership Rooted in Purpose
The partnership between SayPro and the University of Johannesburg is one grounded in mutual goals: empowering youth, providing work-integrated learning, and building a sustainable future. UJ’s commitment to equipping students with both academic knowledge and real-world skills has made them an ideal collaborator for SayPro, whose mission is to uplift disadvantaged communities through education, training, and employment opportunities.
SayPro has hosted over 100 interns from UJ in the past two years, many of whom have gone on to full-time employment or launched their own ventures. These internships provide critical hands-on experience in project management, nonprofit operations, youth development, and community engagement.
Trust That Delivered Results
“When UJ told us not to worry, that these young people were ready to take on the world, we had to trust their word — and that trust has paid off tenfold,” Malatjie added. “What we saw was beyond potential; we saw passion, innovation, and a drive to make a difference.”
Interns from UJ have worked across several SayPro programs, including digital literacy training, youth entrepreneurship, and public sector advocacy. Many have played key roles in organizing community dialogues, managing data systems, and leading youth-focused workshops.
A Message to the Future
Malatjie’s message is not only one of appreciation but also a call to continue investing in partnerships that uplift South Africa’s youth.
“To the leadership at UJ, the lecturers, the internship coordinators, and especially to the students — thank you. Your faith in the process, your resilience, and your belief that everything would work out have inspired us deeply. This is more than an internship programme; it’s a movement toward transformation.”
He concluded with a renewed commitment to expand the collaboration:
“Let this be just the beginning. SayPro remains committed to being a practical ground for your students. We look forward to welcoming many more bright minds from UJ into our mission of changing lives, one project at a time.”
